Agafay is located approximately 30 kilometres southwest of Marrakech city centre. In road terms, the route is straightforward: you leave Marrakech heading south, pass through the Tamansourt direction and continue southwest toward the Agafay plateau. The road distance varies slightly depending on your starting point within Marrakech — departure from the medina is slightly longer than from Guéliz, and both are somewhat longer than from the southern suburbs. Expect somewhere between 28 and 35 kilometres door-to-door.
That distance is genuinely close in Moroccan terms. Many popular excursions from Marrakech — the Ourika Valley, Ait Ben Haddou, the Draa Valley — involve significantly longer drives. Agafay's proximity to the city is one of its defining advantages: you can be standing in the medina at 8am and riding a quad across open rocky terrain by 9am. That makes it uniquely suited to short stays, half-day itineraries and travellers who want a desert experience without committing to a full day of travel.
Driving Time
The journey from central Marrakech to Agafay takes between 30 and 40 minutes in normal traffic conditions. Early morning departures (before 8:30am) on weekdays are the fastest — traffic within the city is light and the road to Agafay is clear. Late morning and midday departures can add 10–15 minutes due to traffic through the southern commercial districts. Rush-hour departures (5–8am) on busy days can be slower through central Marrakech, though the road itself is quiet.
From the medina specifically, allow 40 minutes as a comfortable baseline — medina traffic patterns are less predictable than Guéliz or the new town, and allowing a buffer means you arrive relaxed rather than stressed. From Guéliz, 30–35 minutes is usually accurate. From Hivernage or the hotel belt south of the medina, 25–30 minutes is typically sufficient.
There's no traffic to speak of on the Agafay road itself once you're clear of the city outskirts. The route passes through small settlements and agricultural land, then transitions smoothly to the more open territory approaching the plateau.
Transport Options
A taxi is the most flexible DIY option if you're not booking a tour with included transfer. Grand taxis operate on fixed routes serving the southern and southwestern suburbs, and the Agafay direction is covered by vehicles departing from the stands near Bab Doukkala and other city gates. Alternatively, private taxis (petit taxis in the city, grand taxis for longer distances) will take you directly to your departure point. Negotiate the fare and return arrangement before you get in — agree the pick-up time, note the driver's number and confirm the return fare explicitly.
Renting a car makes excellent sense if Agafay is one stop on a broader day that also includes, for example, a drive through the Ourika Valley or a stop at Lalla Takerkoust lake. The road to Agafay doesn't require a 4x4 — standard cars handle it without difficulty year-round. Google Maps and Apple Maps both navigate the route accurately. Parking at most tour departure points and camps is free and uncrowded.

What to Expect on the Journey
The drive out of Marrakech toward Agafay takes you through an interesting cross-section of the city and its periphery. Leaving from the medina, you pass through the southern Marrakech commercial districts — mechanics, building supplies, light industry — before the density begins to drop and the landscape opens up. There's a gradual transition from urban sprawl to agricultural smallholdings, olive groves and then to the drier, flatter terrain that signals the beginning of the Agafay territory.
The last stretch of road before the plateau is often the most visually striking part of the journey. The ground becomes visibly more arid, the settlements thin out and the Atlas Mountains appear increasingly prominent on the horizon. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks are visible from the road well before you arrive at the tour departure point.
The journey is short enough not to feel like a commitment and distinctive enough — especially in spring when the landscape has brief green colour — to be pleasant in its own right. Most visitors find that the anticipation builds gradually as the terrain changes, which is a better prelude to the activity than arriving with no sense of transition.
